Q: What is the Rotary 911 Memorial project?
A: A life size bronze sculpture depicting a fire fighter was created as a visual expression in response to the tragic events of 9-11. It is titled “Every Day A Hero”. As a tribute to first responders, Rotary District 5440 committed to sending it to New York commemorating the tenth anniversary of 9-11 sending the message “We will remember”.
Q. Who made the sculpture?
A: It was sculpted by artist Colette Pitcher and cast at Dragon Casting (Eaton, CO) owned by Gary Pitcher. Both are Rotarians (Centennial and High Plains clubs).
Q: Where will the sculpture go?
A: The goal is to place this memorial symbol in the New York area where it can be an inspiration and tribute. A fire station in Williston Park just outside of Queens where many fire fighters and their families live has been chosen as the site.
Q: What is the sculpture made of?
A: The sculpture is cast in bronze.
Q: How much does it weigh?
A: Approximately 350 pounds including the steel 4’x4’ base.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: It will cost $30,000 for the sculpture, its delivery and installation. That is why we need your help to fundraise the project.
Q: Who is buying the memorial?
A: It will be fundraised by Rotarians of district 5440, other interested individuals and businesses that want to send the message “We will not forget“.
A. Fund raising will be conducted by selling small replicas of the sculpture. The small sculpture is called a maquette and is a foot tall. It is on a walnut base and is solid bronze. The Marquette will sell for $600. We will need to sell 30 to generate enough funds to cover the NY monument. Pins are available at $5 and proceeds will fund the project.
Q: Is this the only one?
A: Bronze sculptures are created in editions to help spread out the cost of the mold. “Every Day A Hero” has a 20 edition limit. We would like number 9 to go to New York. If there is enough interest in raising the funds, we would like to place #11 in Greeley as a partner to “Build Better Friendships” by reaching across the nation, promising not to forget, and memorialize by strengthening those who remember. Other communities can purchase a monument until the edition is sold out.
